Web Development and Web Design
We’re often asked whether we here at Websites for Main Street are web developers. It’s a tough question to answer, but here it is: yes and no.
The term is currently used to describe a broad array of activities…and it’s every bit as confusing as the term ‘website designer’.
Before we get too lost in a discussion that comes up often but never gets adequately resolved, let us say that we don’t consider ourselves web developers in the strict sense. From our point of view, a web developer is a programmer and/or coder who designs and debugs new and unique applications, whether for a narrow or broad audience.
Using a CMS Platform
We work primarily within the WordPress ecosphere. The advantage to working in a CMS is obvious: although we do employ some development tools to adjust sites to specific needs, much of the groundwork has already been done for us. That means less cost for our customers, as they pay only for design and hosting, rather than the creation of a site from scratch.
And other important skills get called into play when creating websites for customers: we work to assure usability in the form of good navigation and page layouts. In our case, we work in Photoshop to create and optimize images and design for your site.
So the bottom line is this: we’re good at working with customers to identify a need, and then finding an online solution to fill that need, whether something exists ‘off-the-shelf’ or not. Whatever it takes, to make your site perform the way it needs to.
And Now, a Word About Hosting
“Hosting”(also known as website hosting, web hosting, and webhosting) refers to the housing, serving, and maintaining of files for multiple websites. Although the computer space provided for website files is important, fast connection speed is paramount.
Most of the time we highly recommend that you allow us to provide hosting services for the finished site. And no, that does NOT mean your web files are located on a server computer in the back closet of our house. We purchase space on server banks of professional hosting companies that provide us with security, reliability, and support.
Currently, the server options we offer our customers are either a Virtual Private Server (VPS), or a dedicated server, both of which allow us root access to each server environment. Although this is a more expensive solution than others, it assures our customers of easy, quick site loading and nearly no downtime.
We pride ourselves in the overall quality and service we provide our customers, whether for design, development, hosting, or SEO. Whatever your website design and hosting needs, we can work with you to provide the best site for your company.
